The Traditional

The Traditional is a derivative of the early Kentucky style dulcimer dating back to JE Thomas in the 1800’s. Distinctive characteristics are the hourglass shape, scroll peghead, and violin edging. Over the many years of evolution, the body has gotten bigger and deeper resulting in a deeper rich voice. My variation also features a hybrid scroll head which has the characteristic shape of a scroll, but has the more ergonomic features of a flat peghead as far as string access. I have been building this particular dulcimer since the mid-90’s after being handed off to me from the late Larry Barringer.
